Niemann’s Rook Sacrifice in the Grand Swiss

Published 9/21/2025

Hello everyone! Today we will be taking a look at Hans Niemann’s game against young Turkish prodigy Erdogmus. The game was played in Round 7 of the very recent FIDE Grand Swiss, and both players needed a win to have chances to compete for the Candidates spot. The game started off with a solid Petroff, but the position quickly became very dynamic and sharp.

Let’s take a look at the game:

I think the biggest takeaway from this game is the Nb3 decision from Hans, sacrificing the rook for an attack. It goes to show that in sharp positions, you shouldn’t always be materialistic as sacrifices might be necessary to create a winning attack. The Nb3 idea not only created a nice outpost for the knight on c5, but also opened up the dark squared bishop on c1.

I hope you enjoyed the game and learned something new. If you have any suggestions for the next article, let me know in the comments below!
