Tal’s Attacking Masterpieces Part 1

Published 6/15/2025

Hey guys! As many of you know, Mikhail Tal is very renowned for his attacking chess. Oftentimes, he would sacrifice pieces for an attack even when there was an easier, more dull way to win the game. Let’s take a look at one of his masterpieces against Robert Forbis which exemplified his sharp, aggressive playstyle.

Key takeaways from the game:

-Always be on high alert for a chance to attack when your opponent’s king has limited defenders, even if it means sacrificing material.

-The sacrifice doesn’t have to result in a winning position at first, it only has to make it difficult for your opponent to find the right moves. In this game, Tal wasn’t winning after Qh6, but he made it difficult for Forbis to find the right moves and he eventually went wrong with Rfe8.
